A vibrant visual identity system for the NYC kava bar. Inspired by vintage thrift stores and tropical vibes. Honored as a finalist in the Identity category of the AIGA Flux Design Competition, 2022.
Misfit Kava Bar is a vibrant cornerstone of the Bushwick (NYC) art and music community. They were in need of a brand language to unify their messaging while capturing their zany, creative spirit.
The bar’s owners love decorating the space with vintage thrift-store items, and they serve tropical-inspired cocktails. Their audience is young, eclectic, artistic, and intellectual. These insights led me to combine funky typography, a 60s “flower-girl” vintage aesthetic, and a tropical-inspired laid-back color palette for the final brand.
I knew the brand needed to be eclectic, full of energy, and tons of fun. Oh No Blazeface ended up being the perfect choice for a typemark and display typeface, while Proxima Nova's more neutral (but still fun!) aesthetic contrasted perfectly as a supporting typeface.
Combining a tropical color palette with vintage-inspired patterns and simple vector illustrations helped capture the spirit of the bar and its customers.
